Isaac's Play

Isaac is all about imaginary play right now. He loves making up stories and acting them out with his toys. And he really loves when he has a playmate to boss around. His favorite is when he can tell someone what to make their toy say. Playing with him typically sounds something like this:

Isaac: "Oh no, my engine broke down, said the little train," (He speaks like he is reading a book, which is pretty cute).

"Mom/Dad, say 'I'll help fix you, little train.'" (And repeat if you don't respond immediately)

Mom/Dad: "I'll help fix you, little train."

Isaac: "Thanks, big brother, I need my engine fixed, said the little train."

"Say, 'Okay, I'll go get my tools.'"

And so on . . .

At least he is using double the imaginative power, even if you're bored out of your mind because you get no say in the story line.

Emma, Five Weeks Old

Our sweet girl has a face full of itchy eczema this week. We had to take her in to be seen on Monday because it was so itchy and irritated. The doctor thinks it will clear up on its own, but since Isaac had a milk protein sensitivity as a baby, I'm afraid Emma's eczema could be due to the same problem. I'm doing a trial period without dairy to see if it helps. Anything to relieve her discomfort, poor girl.

Isaacisms

I figured it was time for another post of our favorite Isaacisms as of late. I've been collecting them since the fall, so we'll say these are some of Isaac's silly sayings from about two-and-a-half to three years old.

"Is it big dark or slow dark outside?" (Big dark meaning time for bed.)
"That is my bless you." (His snot.)
"I'm a workin' man (or airplane man, angelfish worker man, massage man, speedlivery man)."
"Mommy, you talk to that pumpkin and I'll talk to this pumpkin." (While in the garden. My heart!!)
"I have a baby sister in my belly, too."
Whispered excitedly, "Mommy, do you want to go get ees sweam?" (I said no. Then:) "Mommy, do you want to go for a bike ride?!"
"No, don't laugh, it's not funny."
"Mommy, no, don't dance, you'll make me angry again."
"Here I come, ready I not!" (Playing Hide and Seek)
"Hi, baby sister. You stay in and grow until you come out at Christmas."
Cheater bunnies (cheddar bunnies)
Toe thumbs (big toes)
Loose Phyllis (Louisville)
Ba-chata (Lady parts)
Boo-boos (The other lady parts)
"I love you the best way."
"It's no worse." (It's no use.)
"Why are these tiny pants?" (Referring to the shorts I put on him a few weeks ago.)
"I have a headache in my tummy."
"Mommy, you're not my best girl, Auntie Meagan is my best girl now."
His favorite made-up names for his animals are Jeff-us and Jess-us (not to be confused with Jesus).

Here is another video of Isaac's speech at three years old. This conversation isn't especially exciting, but it is a perfect example of a typical conversation with Isaac now.

We love this little man so much!

Beautiful Dreamer

Emma, One Month Old

Our baby girl is one month old today. Emma weighs 9 pounds 12 ounces--just one pound more than she weighed at birth--and measures 21 inches. She's measuring in the 50th to 75th percentile for height and weight, much like her brother did when he was a newborn.

I think Emma looks more like me than she does Ben. Her eyes and dark hair resemble mine (though I was bald until I was three!). She has Ben's dimpled chin and face shape, though, just as Isaac does. And I blame her chubby, chubby cheeks on Ben, too. Isaac and Emma share that feature, too. Looking back at Isaac's one month photos, I see a lot of resemblance between the two of them, minus the hair, obviously. Isaac was born with dark hair too, albeit much less than Emma, but his lightened over the first year. I'm curious to see what happens with Emma's hair. The color is really gorgeous, and I'd love for her to keep it. Ben thinks she'll have curly dark hair, like me.

She's just beginning to smile and make some pretty adorable baby coos. Noises so delicious I could eat her:

I haven't really found a pattern in Emma's schedule yet. Her nighttime feedings are all over the place. Some nights she'll go five or six hours between, other nights she nurses every two hours. Since she is in bed with us, the more frequent nursing sessions don't really bother me. I just turn on my side, make sure she is latched, she nurses and we both doze back to sleep. I honestly don't know what I'd do if we had other sleeping arrangements. With a toddler and a newborn keeping me going all day long, there is no time for rest. Having her next to me in bed is a lifesaver.

I have to say, I was surprised by how certain I felt as soon as Emma was born that our family was complete. Mama, Daddy, Isaac, and Emma. One month in, it's sometimes hard to remember life without her. Emma Noelle, you complete our sweet family of four.
